Ghosts on Tape
I’m in San Francisco this week, and finally saw Ghosts on Tape play at 222 (222 Hyde at Turk). You’re asking, “Who in the name of turbo crunk are Ghosts on Tape? They sure do have an awthum name.” Well dear sir or madam, “they” is just “he,” and he is one of the Bay Area pioneers of lazer bass, a jaunty form of electro with all the bells and whistles of hyphy and grime. An unseemly pairing, but this stuff is so fucking dancy you will lose your ass in a cyclone of killer moves. More people in Austin need to give this stuff a try, especially with all those old samplers floating around; I’ve seen ‘em, put ‘em to use! Get off your indie rock pony for a minute and hop on the soaring back of the lazer bass Pegasus. Freal.
More lazerz:
Lazer Sword
Megasoid
The Glitch Mob
8-bit Blasters
While perusing the awthum “Happenings” section, I stumbled into a name I didn’t know:
Turns out he’s kind of a badass with a SID chip and old 8-bit sounds, and lucky for you, he’s playing with Gary B (Gayle Gold) on Saturday the 16th at End of An Ear Records (2209 S. 1st Street). The whole concept of re-appropriating old technology for new music isn’t ground-breaking or anything, but man, Hexcrusher sure knows how to squeeze out some fucking good sounds.
Other Texas chippies, if you’re curious:
Yatagarasu (also playing with Hexcrusher and Gary B. I think)
Treewave
…way more than I probably know. Post some. I’m craving this shit.
Fizzy Dino Pop and Lady Pterodactyl
You, raucous music lover, keep in mind that Fizzy Dino Pop and Lady Pterodactyl will be up to their antics at the Carousel Lounge on August 16th, benefiting the ever-devious KVRX. It’s a cupcake social too, so you can even get some free yummy in your tummy.
Get your knee-highs and dancing shoes on, surriously.
