Really digging Austin’s Lobster Tales, a new musical endeavor featuring local artist Ryan Lauderdale. I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek of Lobster Tales’ new release, I, which features two 22+ minute long tracks of dreamy, psych space folk/electronic ambience.
The record’s ambiguous production quality is incredibly striking to me; at times, it sounds like it was recorded in 1973, and at other times, 2073. I can definitely hear a slew of different influences in the rhythmic movements and overall aesthetic — from Can to Sun Ra to Klaus Schulze to King Crimson. The way in which the melodies are built up and dramaticized intertwine together brilliantly, revealing a multi-layered pop soundscape that forces the senses to simultaneously relax and freak out.
Ryan told me he’s not sure if he could pull this stuff off live, but if he did, I would definitely consider growing my hair down to my knees, mixing magic potions from recipes found on witch websites, and popping psychedelics, just for the show. I’m just that dedicated to live music.
